Elijah had woken up too early. He’d checked on the guys and he’d gotten back in bed next to Sawyer. He could live in her bed, never moving, and it would be perfect. The night they had…

It was one of the best of his life. The sounds she made. The way she looked when the sweat made her skin damp. How smooth she was. How she moved.

Perfection.

The she began to roll away.

“Where are you going?” he asked deviously. He wasn’t ready for her to leave him just yet. He wanted to keep her in bed for as long as he could. He didn’t want her getting up and remembering what else had happened the night before. Its why he’d gotten back into bed. So he could remember this part, not the other.

“To find someone who isn’t threatening to turn me into a puddle of nerve endings,” she mumbled. “And hopefully, the bathroom.”

“The bathroom is a possibility, but since you only live with men who want to turn you into a, and I quote, ‘puddle of nerve endings’, I think your overall mission will fail.” He couldn’t suppress how pleased he was with himself. He also loved that she would get up and someone else would be there to make sure she knew she was perfection.

“I’m getting up,” she told him, trying her hardest to sit up. He nearly laughed at the effort she needed to sit up. He hadn’t gone easy on her. “What the fuck did you do to me?”

“I think I fucked you like I’ve wanted to since the night we met,” he answered. “And want to every time I get the chance for a very long time.”

“Oh gods,” she muttered, turning so her feet hung off the edge of the bed. “Do you do Quinn or anyone else like that? Are there countless people out there who will never walk the same again?”

“I normally don’t keep anyone else going three rounds with me, no. That was just for you. Well, for me. That was definitely for me.” Definitely for him. He couldn’t hold back. He’d needed her like a drug, an addiction he’d been running from. Last night, it felt like heaven, to get the high with her. He would have pushed her to a fourth round if he thought she could stay awake for it. He knew in that moment what a fucking horn dog he was.

“Awful,” she mumbled. “What time is it?” she asked, looking around.

“Nearly ten. We’ve missed breakfast. I went down earlier to check on things. Jasper and Vincent were up all night on the phone with James. The WMC and the IMPO put out their statements at seven. Exactly what I thought they would be. Talked all sorts of praise about you, about how you’ve helped them re-establish some connection to some of our wilder people, the Druids, and exposed anti-Magi feelings in Texas. That you’ve been a model agent for the organization. Those types of things.” He took a deep breath before continuing. These were all the reasons he’d decided to get back in bed. He really didn’t want to talk about this, but there was no reason not to tell her the updates before she left. “Also, that we were just having a quiet dinner, as friends, to enjoy the holiday season. They…they might have said something about how you lost someone important this month and that I was just being a good friend to get you out of the house.”

“They didn’t elaborate on that, did they?”

“No, they didn’t. They might not like you, but they won’t blast a story like Henry’s and yours out to the world.” He sat up and rubbed her back. He knew all too well how hard it was to deal with a loss, especially one that felt so unresolved, so senseless. He knew how much it would hurt her if they dragged it up. “They had to think of something to say, and wasn’t that the truth? We wouldn’t have gone on last night’s date if it weren’t for Quinn coming up with the idea of keeping you too busy to think about Henry.”

He rubbed his hands on her back, increasing the pressure, and changing the tone. He needed to get her mind off this. He had some ideas, but then she stood up, wobbling and began to get dressed. He felt a lance of anxiety.

Was she running from him?

“Sawyer?” He sounded worried enough for her to turn and face him. He was glad she cared enough to look at him. He didn’t want her to banish him now. “You don’t need to run from me. I don’t expect anything from this.”

She could only respond with a laugh, shaking her head.

“I didn’t realize I was so funny,” he mumbled. He was used to being the one teasing and laughing, not being the one laughed at.

“I’m not running from you,” she said, trying not to laugh through the words. It led to her giving a snort instead. He tried not to think about how kind of cute the sound was, not while she was running from him. “When have I ever really run from any of you? I’m not the type to run from feelings, unlike someone else in the room.”

“Fair point. I’m just saying-” She was obviously trying to get away from him. He didn’t understand why. She didn’t need to. If she wanted him to go, he would have.

“I know what you’re saying. I care for you. You are a friend, a teammate, and someone I’d kill for. I’m not a teenage girl who needs love to have sex with someone. I’m fine just having sex with a friend. And we’ll see if it goes further. Thankfully, the other guys just let me do me when it comes to this stuff, and it’s not a problem.”

He tried to find anything to say as she continued to speak. Damn, now he felt like an idiot.

“Plus, we’re going to get the muscle car and actually spend more time together. Let’s just see where it goes. Sex, no sex, doesn’t matter. I’m not running from you, though. I really do need to fucking pee.” She turned to leave the room, then waved a hand back at him. “And no, you can’t lie in my bed like that all day. That’s a no go.”

He was laughing as she left. It felt awkward for a moment as the door closed and left him there in her bed.

He got up, the bed creaking. Did he really just fuck that up? He’d just made it weird. He’d never done that. He’d never made the morning after so damn awkward for himself or anyone else in his damn life.

Friends. He would let her think friends for a little while. He was so damn in love with her, but he wasn’t going to push her to love him.

But he was going to tell her that he loved her every chance he got, no matter how fucking awkward he was.
